Biotechnology has created a revolution affecting the world over in every walk of life. With the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, the immense potential that lies in biotechnology has become evident. Today, scientists from every branch of science are looking at biological models to solve their problems. Industries are keenly watching the developments and eager to employ the techniques of biotechnology. Industries are looking forward for biotechnological innovations which would help them not only to solve the problem but also to prosper. Biotechnology has brought new hope for the remediation and conservation of environment. In the field of medicine, drug designing, drug delivery, gene therapy and genetically engineered products are at the forefront.
Biotechnology operates at the molecular level of life, where the seemingly solid boundary between species disappears. Under the umbrella of biotechnology, various fields like microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, cell biology, have opened a great avenue for higher education and employment for the future generation. Hence, the department has formulated an efficient curriculum to impart knowledge and develop skills in students at the various interdisciplinary areas of life science which would directly contribute to the society.
In addition, as far as employment is concerned, biotechnology has become one of the fast growing sectors. In future, biotechnology has a great scope in versatile fields of life sciences. Hence, biotechnologists can find career opportunities in pharmaceutical companies, chemical, agriculture and allied industries. They can also be employed in the areas of planning, production and management of bio-processing industries. In addition, there is a wide opportunity in research sectors run by the government and private organization.
Bioinformatics gain increasing significance with growing focus on research in areas of genomics, proteomics, disease diagnosis, drug discovery and development, structural biology and many more related subjects over the years. Concepts in bioinformatics are derived from powerful theoretical tools to meet the need of the hour.
A team of dedicated, efficient and qualified faculty members have made the department strong and viable. The department is well equipped with sophisticated laboratories, library and learning resources comprising of software and tools. Our department is unique in offering five year integrated M.Sc. Bioinformatics programme which would provide an ultimate platform for young budding students. This would facilitate the students to switch over to interdisciplinary and emerging areas of Life Sciences. Students with a background of biosciences and computer science are eligible to join.
The programme incorporates basic biological (DNA, RNA, Protein) sequence analysis, drug discovery, genomics, proteomics, Next generation sequencing, biostatistics and molecular modelling. In addition, training in mathematical principles (probability, matrices, hidden Markov models, dynamic programming, calculus etc), database management system, and programming tools (Perl, Java, python, R etc.) would support mathematical ability and programming skill to widen career opportunities in the job market.
The Department seeks to function with mutual love, social commitment and conscience to train and develop students through teaching, research and extension activities and engage them to serve the nation in socially relevant areas.
