Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field that deals with the implementation of the latest technological developments for a variety of applications in industry, medicine, and agriculture. Hence, the syllabi of the bachelor degree is designed to understand the basics of biological sciences related to biotechnology such as microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, plant and animal biotechnology which comprises of 140 credits. Students will also get practical skills which required to exploit technological advances to enrich their knowledge for innovations. After a B.Sc degree, students can find jobs in pharmaceutical companies, research and health sectors in India. However, students can also go for higher education to pursue their masters or doctorate studies in core, interdisciplinary and allied fields.

M.Sc degree at Bishop Heber aims at training students to become competent on par with International standard. The course mainly targets to explore the thrust and major fields of the biotechnology. The content of the syllabi comprises of courses like plant, animal and industrial biotechnology, stem cell biology and biotechnology management with relevant practical sessions, and a research project leading to an individual dissertation work. The curriculum is designed with 90 credits to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge.

The scope of M.Sc biotechnology is immense as it focuses on new developments, applications and innovations in various sectors. There are plenty of avenues are available for the freshers based on their interest. After M.Sc degree, they can get good jobs in the pharmaceutical companies, agriculture, chemical industries. They have a great scope in research laboratorty In addition, they get employment in various government based and private Universities and research industries as research scientists or assistants..

Bioinformatics is the research oriented interdisciplinary programme and includes fusion of biology and computer science. This study includes large variety of subjects including biomathematics, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology and computer science which comprises of 230 credits. It is also associated with bioinformatics subjects such as molecular modelling, pharmacoinformatics and drug designing. It offers several analytical software for data analysis and comparison tools for modelling, visualising, exploring and interpreting data. There is a great scope for bioinformatics in India as well as in abroad. It offers various employment opportunity in research, marketing, health care and pharmaceutical industry.

Many M.Sc students tend to pursue their Ph.D degrees in Biotechnology or related fields as a Ph.D degree opens up more avenues both in India and Worldwide. A PhD degree will give you the ability to start your own research lab, become a professor or head of the department in Universities or be the lead for a team of research scientists. If your goal is to create a niche for yourself in Biotechnology, then your best bet will be to get a Ph.D.

Analytical techniques enable students to get trained in laboratory instruments to perform experiments in the fields of microbiology, immunology and analytical techniques. The curriculum is designed with 18 credits to learn theory papers like molecular biology, microbial and immunotechniques. Students who completed this diploma course can have the opportunity to work as lab technician in laboratories and industries.

This programme is designed to provide an exposure in bioinformatics tools and software used to analyse large set of biological data. It comprises of 36 credits including courses on computational biology, computer programming, genomics and proteomics, molecular modelling and drug design and applied bioinformatics in addition to two lab papers and one project. This programme will create interest to get placed in research and pharmaceutical sectors.
