Chemistry is recognized as the central science. Its role in connecting all the other basic sciences has been widely accepted and appreciated. Therefore understanding of the chemical entities and their reactions at the undergraduate level is the foundation for interfacing with other basic sciences. In a developing country like India, with a potential human resource, thrust in equipping students on basic sciences is essential. This necessitates a constant relook and upgradation of the basic science education in every higher educational institution. The DBT – star college scheme gives the right drive for institutions in this regard. The PG & Research Dept. of chemistry proposes to strengthen the existing curriculum offered to the undergraduates. A overall restructuring of the laboratory practices have been done and given a greener go, the missing links between the theoretical concepts and experiments learnt have been identified and established, a realistic and intensive training is provided focusing on individualized learning and hands-on training. A broader outlook of the course and appreciation of the interface of the subject with other basic sciences is to be given through the summer schools and internships.
PG & Research department of chemistry was established in the year 1966 with pre-university course in Chemistry. Presently, it is one of the potential departments in the college, with a rich research. Culture and offering Undergraduate to Ph.D in chemistry. A team of dedicated and efficient faculty members with 9 recognized research advisors serves the department. The department has a sophisticated instrumentation facility sponsored by DST-FIST.
The department came into being in 1966 with per-university programme . The year 1972 fall the introduction of B.Sc (Chemistry)aided section with professor R.Thomas Ponnusamy as the first Head of the Department. PG programme of M.Sc Chemistry was added in the year 1988 and the pinnacle was reached in 1992 with the addition of Ph.D. The self Financing wing took off in 1996 with B.Sc followed by M.Sc in 2006. The department was identified under FIST programme of DST by the Government of India in 2007.Another research M.Phil programme was initiated in 2011.
