Our Department’s mission is to enable students who come from diverse backgrounds, to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for professional social work practice. Integration of professional acumen with basic human values and the Christian spirit of service with dignity is our primary emphasis.
The scope of social work practice is remarkably wide. Social Work Continues to be one of the fastest growing contemporary professions today. Social workers can be found anywhere and everywhere where there are people who need the help of a professional to alleviate personal or social problems.
The focus of the Social Work programme is to foster in the students a sense of Social Commitment by providing them professional training and there by enable them to address the needs of the marginalised sections of the society. The course curriculum is so designed that it facilitates the overall personality development of the students and moulds them to take up the challenges and career opportunities of this demanding and dynamic profession.
Established in 1982, the Department of Social Work of Bishop Heber College has a reputation of moulding top notch social work students to meet the societal challenges. Besides offering a full time two year Master’s program in Social Work (MSW), we also offer courses leading to research degrees of M. Phil, and Ph.D., affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli.
The faculty members of the department are experts in their fields of specialization and have rich experience in social work research and practice. They carry out and facilitate research in their pertinent fields of specializations namely Human Resource Management, Clinical Social Work and Development Management.
The department having celebrated its silver jubilee celebrations, had over the years, developed a strong network with Government departments and NGO’S primarily through the field work training of our the Social Work students. We are in regular contact with agencies working for children, the differently abled, women, rural and urban developmental projects, industries, medical and psychiatric Hospitals. Several community – based programmes are being orgaised by us in collaboration with these organizations. Many of our alumni are employed in these agencies which facilitates our collaboration with them.
