About

Botany is the scientific study of plants. 'Plants,' to most people, mean a wide range of living organisms from the smallest algae to the largest of living things - the giant Sequoia trees. By this definition plants include algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants.

Many people do not realize that most of the basic biological processes are the same in both plants and animals. Plants, however, are the primary producers and provide the necessary living requirements for the entire animal kingdom. Plants have intrigued people for thousands of years. They provide aesthetic beauty as well as materials for our basic needs.

One of the best things about plant science is the number of different specialties and career opportunities from which we can choose. This diversity allows people, with different backgrounds, aptitudes and interests, to find satisfying careers in plant biology.

Among the careers available to a person who enjoys the outdoors, are positions such as ecologist, taxonomist, conservationist, forester, or plant explorer. Their work may take them to exotic lands. It may allow them to live and work outdoors. A person with a mathematical background might find biophysics, developmental botany, genetics, modelling, or systems ecology to be exciting fields. Someone with an interest in chemistry might become a plant physiologist, plant biochemist, molecular biologist, or chemotaxonomist.

The Department of Botany has been rendering the service for the rural and downtrodden people in and around Tiruchirappalli by imparting higher education in Botany since 1982. The UG and PG laboratories are furnished with modern facilities and modern teaching aids.

The department has an eminent faculty working for the students and carrying out various research mostly in the areas of Medicinal plants, Phytochemistry, Tissue culture, Stress Physiology Plant Physiology Nanotechnology, Plant breeding, and Aero Biology.

A beautiful botanical garden with 125 local and endemic medicinal plants and an Arboretum is also being maintained.
