Right from the year 1968 the Department has been offering an Under – Graduate programme in Mathematics leading to the B.Sc. degree in Mathematics. The programme is offered in Aided and Self-Financed sections of the College.
It is a three year programme offered under semester pattern
The programme offers an integrated curriculumcomprising of essential core courses, supportive allied courses, skill oriented elective courses, inter-disciplinary elective courses, value added life oriented courses, a course on environmental studies and a course on gender studies.
This curriculum is on par with those offered by reputed Universities elsewhere and hence it offers both vertical and horizontal mobility across the world to the stake holders. It is updated in a maximum period of three years based on the feedback from the teachers, students and the employers or recruiters of our students.
Hands on experience, in problem solving using the software packages available as in the open sources, is provided to all the students. At the end of the programme the expected outcome is that a student will be able to take up a Post- Graduate programme or any industrial/public sector job that demands problem solving skill along with the skill in developing algorithms and computer codes or a professional course in education or a business on his own.
The Post-Graduate programme leading to the M.Sc.degree in Mathematics has been offered by the Department since 1978 in the Aided section and from 2006 in the Self-Financed section.
This programme provides an in-depth knowledge in the core and applied Mathematics with a project work as an initiative to research. The content of each course is chosen so as to enable the students to clear the professional screening examinations of National level or to take up research anywhere across the globe or to enter into the IT sector.
The research programmes in Mathematics leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics are offered by the Department under the guidelines of the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli right from the year 1986 when it was recognized as a ‘Research Centre’ by the same University. The research works are registered with the University and the research supervisors are the approved supervisors of the University.
This programme trains the students through courses on teaching University Mathematics, Research Methodology, Advanced core Mathematics and provides opportunity to specialize in a field of interest by doing a theory course followed by a dissertation for which a semester is devoted. The registration for the course is with the Bharathidasan University through the College.

The Department provides opportunity to take up a doctoral study in anyone of the areas, Numerical Analysis for Singular Perturbation Problems, Numerical Methods for Differential Equations, Fuzzy Logics, Stochastic Processes and Manpower Planning, Graph Theory and Operations Research. There are 11 Research Supervisors and 32 Research Scholars currently engaged in research. Among the research scholars there is a Junior Research Fellow(UGC) and an Inspire Fellow(DST).
The Department of Mathematics has been conducting the Certificate Programme in LaTeX since 2006.LaTeX is a software package for Scientific Documentation and is available in the Web as an open source. The Programme includes 20 theory hours and 40 practical hours. A separate PC is allotted to every student during practical hours. The Programme results in making the students entrepreneurs and it supports the students in research and in their career advancement. It is remarkable that these students have got placement in Scientific Publishing Services Ltd., Tiruchirappalli.The important feature of this certificate programme is that it is offered for a very low fees(almost one-tenth of the fees charged by a computer centre) so as to enable all the students to acquire this additional skill.
With a similar vision another certificate programme in R, a software package for Mathematical and Statistical computations, is offered from the year 2015. It is open to the students of all disciplines. A student who has been trained in R will be able to take up a career in areas like software solutions, big data analytics etc.
The Department has a good team of Teachers who can train the students in R and LaTeX.
