About

The office of the Deanery of Academics of Bishop Heber College functions as two wings -Humanities and Sciences, offering academic counsel and support to all - Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M. Phil., Ph.D. Research, Diploma, PG Diploma and Certificate programs and other academic services untaken by the College. The Deanery of Academics works in collaboration with all the Departments in the college. It contributes to serving the students, advancing invaluable research and creative activity that are truly inspiring.


Deanery of Academics focuses on teaching and learning in the domain of Academics. Students are seen to graduate with critical and creative insights on our diverse and rapidly changing world and to realize their own potential to contribute to a better world. They are trained to be good citizens, agile thinkers and enterprising workers. The Deanery ensures that quality education is provided to the students by cultivating the students’ capacity to think, analyze, imagine and communicate. Avenues are created for UGs and PGs to enhance their academics and major area of study with skills developed through integrated programs, study abroad, field work, internships, and career focused majors and minors.


The Deanery ensures that Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Sciences make meaningful and tangible contributions to the student community, the society and the nation at large focusing on the contemporary needs of the academia, job market and the competency demands of the global scene. It motivates the teachers to be committed to the task of exploring ideas, expanding perspectives and building understanding with the students and among the students. Thus the Deanery ensures that Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Sciences make meaningful and tangible contributions to the student community, the society and the nation at large focusing on the contemporary needs of the academic world, job market and the competency demands at the global scene. Over 12,000 students in all the programmes are benefitted through the Deanery’s services.

The Deanery of Academics is dedicated to steer the institution in pursuit of excellence in scholastic endeavours and to chart out the schemata, which encompasses a diverse, dispassionate and compendious learning environment for all.

The following schema guides our efforts in our journey towards enlightening minds and edifying lives in Bishop Heber campus with the:

  • Curriculum that emphasizes encyclopedic, enormously catholic and engagingly compendious erudition to nurture the creative, critical, problem-solving abilities and ethical stance of the faculty and the students.
  • Academic Programmmes that create avenues for the faculty and the students by organizing many wide-ranging career and professional training to help them move forward with courage to meet the educational challenges of the present times.
  • Student Support and Servicesthat facilitate students to recognize the value of their core skills gained through education and prepare them for future collaborative endeavours and study abroad.
  • Governance, Leadership and Management that promote aptitude and accountability through “Cell for Academic Excellence” for the faculty and “Student Council/Student Academic Council” for the students across all disciplines of study to make them involved in general activities, academic planning and decision-making processes.







Policies

  • Ensuring implementation of the vision and mission of the college through academic matters.
  • Leading and coordinating the governance of the college in academic areas and in the development of curriculum to the latest demands.
  • Proposing budget to plan academic activities/ to run conferences and workshops based on the needs of the departments and recommending to the administration to release funds for the same.
  • Endorsing the curriculum designed by the departments which supports the students’ exponential growth in terms of knowledge in academic domains and major areas of study.
  • Facilitating the departments in offering skill oriented courses, non-major electives courses, value-added courses that would benefit students to face contemporary demands at market place.
  • Coordinating the professional development of the faculty members by motivating them to constantly update on methods of teaching-learning activities using modern tools for modern generation and improving their skills by organizing many training programs and workshops
  • Launching of new programs and approving the new programs initiated by the departments
  • Monitoring the regular conduct of the classes by the departments/ faculty members
  • Evaluating the departmental methods of instruction, periodical Lab auditing and the other service efforts
  • It is a regulatory body to ensure that the departments offer integrated programs, study abroad, field works, internships, and career-focused majors and minors.
  • Ensuring if the PG departments guide the Post Graduate students to work at the cutting edge innovative projects/ research works and research publications in their discipline, while also learning professional and applied skills to ensure that their expertise can serve inside and outside academia, to the communities at large.
  • Installing the Student Council and Academic Council and guiding in all their activities
  • The Deanery is a part of all the Academic Boards and the Academic Council, where the syllabi are ratified, before they are endorsed by the external Experts and passed on, in the Academic Council
  • It provides the Blue Print for the Question Paper setting and checks OBE ready syllabus before they are passed on to the CoE’s Office
  • It takes care of all matters concerning academic affairs.


Roles and Responsibilites

1.Academic Regulations on Teaching learning and Evaluation

  • Implementing academic framework for teaching and learning methodologies by way of recommending Academic Calendar, Course Handouts, Teaching Plan, Work Diary which build awareness among the staff and students on the academic plan and the connection it fosters among effective teaching, students’ learning experience and their career readiness.
  • Regulations are framed for the virtual teaching and the Blended learning by recommending etiquettes, promoting and honing the skills needed in the usage of various ICT tools for Teaching – Learning processes.
  • Recommendations are placed on evaluation procedures through the Academic Council to the office of the Controller of Examinations.

2.Curriculum:

  • Prescribing guidelines for designing curriculum, promoting inception of innovative new programs/courses at various levels and involve in strategic planning for improving the quality check on the programmes offered by regularly procuring feedback from the stake holders and the student representatives, subject experts and industry experts.
  • We develop and implement structure for curriculum and ascertain if the process is intelligible to students by way of reviewing the curricula by evaluating the Programme, Course and Graduate outcomes at various levels to facilitate opportunities for their all-round development.
  • We respond not only to the contemporary social and market needs but also engage students to be decisive in tackling conflicting challenges that intersect with their peaceful environs by introducing topics that will hone their critical and problem solving abilities and by offering Value Added and Life Oriented courses.
  • We monitor the conduct of the Board of Studies and specify norms for the revision of the Syllabus, Course Outline based on the stipulations proposed by the UGC.

3. Student Support and Progression:

  • Facilitating students to recognize the value of their core skills gained through education, including communication, soft skills, computer & information literacy, problem solving, collaboration and cross-cultural insights by providing opportunities for learning across universities through online and study-abroad practices.
  • Students’ systematic ‘Feedback’ mechanism on Curriculum and Syllabus help in the restructuring and enhancement of the academic standards.

4. Governance, Leadership and Management:

  • Striving to increase engagement and commitment of the faculty members across departments under the aegis of “Cell for Academic Excellence” and the students through the “Student Academic Council” across all disciplines of study and involve them in academic planning and decision making processes and identify and cater to the needs of the faculty, students and Departments.
  • The Deanery takes extraordinary measures to open up avenues for the faculty members as well as the students by organizing many wide-ranging career and professional training via Workshops, Faculty Development Programs, Training Programs, Seminars and Discussion Forums to benefit them to move forward with courage to meet the educational challenges of the present times.
