The Department of Environmental Sciences was started in 1984, the first of its kind in South India, with a mission to Ensure Environmental Sustainability.
The Department is committed to meeting the environmental goals of the UN Millennium Declaration by getting the cooperation of alumni, institutions of higher education, policymakers, governmental and non-governmental organizations, administrators and a cross section of people to discuss and prepare achievable plan of action through sustainable partnerships.
The department seeks to function through mutual love and compassions with nature, understanding the stewardship role, catering to the society and in the maintenance of the sustainability of the environment by creating environmentally conscious and ethically bound individuals.
The expertise of the faculty of the department of Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science are also appropriately availed.
The PG and Research Department of Environmental Sciences exists to impart quality higher education to ensure environmental sustainability with an interdisciplinary concentration leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Environmental Sciences. The programme and activities are structured to understand and recognize the values of environmental components, to clarify the concepts pertaining to the dynamics of environment, to assess and evaluate the status of environment and its impacts and to mitigate environmental problems. Thus the qualified environmentally conscious individuals are increasingly sought by environmental consultancies, teaching fraternities, Government agencies, research and development organizations, industries waste management facilities, educational institutions and numerous other agencies.
