The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1972. Over the decades, with a team of well qualified, experienced and energetic faculty provided the right platform for the students to have a strong fundamental knowledge on the biology of animals. With this strong foundation that they acquire here, many of our alumni excel in their careers.The Department started DAMLT in 2008 and as a milestone M.Sc Zoology in 2012. In these years, Department of Zoology has established excellent faculty strength, State of art Lab, a first-rate infrastructure and an amiable ambience to do good science as evident from excellent publications and societal contributions to healthcare.
The current areas of interest in Biology have been incorporated into the curriculum to make our students compete globally. In PG, CSIR-NET based curriculum has been incorporated. To make education “Student centric”, all Skilled based elective courses Sericulture, Pisciculture and Vermiculture have been converted to Practical oriented programmes with a thrust on field visits. These courses promote practical skills, entrepreneurship and employment. Collaboration with the CSI Mission hospital for the DAMLT programme.Collaborative research with the Bharathidasan university in the Department of Environmental Biotechnology, Butterfly Park, Srirangam and Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, Ariyalur. Association of the department invites experts from diversified fields of biology for a better exposure on the current areas of interest.Workshops are conducted in the thrust areas of Biology for the staff and students to promote research aptitude among students. To have an insight into the practical aspects of curriculum, field visits and educational tour to reputed National Institutions and Wildlife sanctuaries are regularly arranged by the Department. Faculty members are publishing books, receiving awards, invited as resource persons, member of Board of studies and reviewer in the reputed journals.
The Department is proud to conduct WINGS a state level intercollegiate competitions centered on the field of Biology from 2015 onwards annually. Its objective is to bring out the hidden talents of the students and help them explore new frontiers.As a part of the DAMLT programme activities, Annual Medical Camps have been organized for the benefit of the staff and students of the college and also for the villagers and school children.
Faculty members are actively involved in research in their respective areas of specialization byreceiving major project from DST and minor projects from UGC (ongoing) with the total grant of Rs.58,40,000 and publish research papers in the reputed journals.
As we promote quality teaching, students have bagged consecutively top most University ranks from 2008 to 2016 and the pass percentage of the students have increased progressively. To enhance the research aptitude and learning process, students are encouraged to present papers in the conferences and to publish books. Students have participated in many inter-collegiate competitions and won laurels to our Department by winning many trophies. Students have also excelled in sports and NCC.
The Department seeks to impart life sciences to all, especially the poor, the needy and the under-privileged, and do research in life sciences to disseminate the findings for the betterment of the world.
