
The Department of Bioinformatics was established in 2013. It offers a five-year M.Sc. program in Integrated Bioinformatics with six faculty members and 214 students. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and statistics. The main goal of the program is to develop methods for storing, retrieving, and analyzing biological data. This program provides central databases that enable scientists to access and analyze information from anywhere in the world. The curriculum includes courses on Genomics, Proteomics, Programming in R and Python, Biostatistical Analysis, Systems Biology, Big Data Analytics, Computational biology, data mining, and Cheminformatics. The course provides students with tools for data mining, comparison, visualization, exploration, and interpretation of data with online and offline tools and software. The program aims to convert complex data into useful information and knowledge. To join this programme, students need to learn about structural biology and modeling, mathematical optimization, computer graphics theory, and linear algebra. Graduates can find employment in the field of computer-aided drug discovery, NGS data analysis, Bio-diversity data management, computational chemistry, IT sector, Bio analyst, and computational sequence analyst. The program provides effective teaching and learning and creates a conducive atmosphere for innovative practices. Students benefit from theoretical exposure in academics, as well as commercial software packages and high-end workstations, which provide more exposure to hands-on experiments to develop innovative ideas.
Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics (PGDBI) initiated in 2006 are offered to life science and other science students to upgrade and apply their knowledge for cross-disciplinary applications to provide innovative outcomes in biological drug discovery.

The Master of Science in Bioinformatics (Integrated) is an interdisciplinary five year programme that combines the application of computer technology and analysis of biological data. The programme was specifically designed to develop skills in computer programming, data analysis, and problem solving. Students would acquire knowledge in technology competency and creativity to handle biological information related to Genomics, Proteomics, molecular biology using various softwares to provide meaningful and innovative outcomes for industrial, research oriented and socially relevant problems.
