
In spite of the global recession, software industries in India are at its peak and computer professionals are sought after by the software industries all over the world. The number of people using software applications developed by multinational companies like IBM, Oracle, Microsoft and others are increasing by and large, resulting more job opportunities for students pursuing industry-oriented computer courses.
The PG Department of Computer Science is the pioneer department, and Bishop Heber College was the first to offer a degree in Computer Science in the city of Tiruchirappalli from the year 1984. The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes like B.Sc., M. Sc., M. Phil and Ph.D. programmes in Computer Science to impart quality education for the students especially the poor, the needy and the underprivileged by providing more career opportunities in IT sectors, educational sectors, banking and public sectors.
The department comprises 20 doctorates, 6 members who have cleared NET and 9 members who have cleared SET. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art computer labs with high-end research tools and software applications. The department library holds latest journals and books on computer science. The department has a separate e-lab for surfing purposes. The A/C Seminar Hall with excellent seating arrangement and LCD projector is optimally used for various academic activities.
The Association of Computer Science regularly organizes seminars, webinars, workshops, conferences, training programmes, and technical events nurturing research outlook among the students. The ACM Student Chapter and Women Chapter give a platform where students can interact with the outside world. The Department has produced quality professionals holding important positions in the IT industry in India and in abroad.
