About the Department







The Department of Commerce owes its existence to the former Department of Corporate Secretaryship, affiliated to the University of Madras since 1977. The department offered B.A. Degree programme in Corporate Secretaryship and in 1984 was converted into Department of Commerce affiliating with the Bharathdiasan University, Tiruchirapalli. Since then, the Department offers B. Com degree programme.

The programmes offered by the Department are very much sought after by a very large section of students of both genders, who desire in excelling in Accounting, Audit, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, E-Commerce, Computational Accounting, and Information Technology used in Finance.

The Department of Commerce has a unique place in the college as it manifests camaraderie among all its members sans discrimination of any sort. It exhibits a vibrant atmosphere as all the members of the staff are dedicated, committed, accessible and responsive to the needs of the students. The students enrolled in the department experience the best of academic ambience of the Heber campus and the professional curricular exercise with a human touch. This holistic combination provides ample scope for the students to hone their extra academic skills and develop their personality.

The Department is proud of its students who have always shown excellence in curricular, cocurricular and extracurricular activities like NCC, NSS, Sports and other extension activities.

The students of the Department have been securing University ranks consistently in B.Com, B. Com CA, and M.Com. Many students go on to complete CA, CMA, CS and other professional courses.

The students also undertake a major socially responsible project during their stay in the Department and help those in need. This has helped them to be aware of the concerns of the society around them and inculcates in them the habit of giving and helping those in need. Recent projects include providing help to homes for HIV +ve children, destitute and orphans, and sponsoring a three-wheel scooter for an orthopedically challenged student of the college.

Our students have been placed through Campus placements in Reputed Corporates like McKinsey, TCS, CTS, DELL, Royal Bank of Scotland, GoldManSachs, I Nautix, Capgemini, Atos and Karvy.

The Department is proud of its distinguished alumni who occupy high positions in the corporate hierarchy both in India and abroad in institutions like the World Bank, Credit Suisse, etc., The alumni of the department are entrepreneurs owning Textile chains, Star Hotels, C&F Agencies etc. A strong network of our alumni contributes to the welfare of our students through their financial support and placement support which help the department explore new avenues.

  1. Tally – Training and Assessment Center

  • Established to equip our commerce undergraduates with essential accounting skills, the centre offers comprehensive training and certification in TallyPrime, the latest and industry-leading accounting software. This initiative underscores Bishop Heber College's dedication to providing domain-specific knowledge, cultivating crucial life skills, and promoting the overall development of our student community

  1. Embed Excel Certification

  • The Department of Commerce offers Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate Certification to all the Second Year Under Graduates of all commerce stream (Including Aided, Self-Finance and Specialization Courses). This particular certification is an internationally recognized certificate from Microsoft. This enhances the quality of our students in all domains

  1. C-SAP (Commerce – Social Action Plan)

  • Every year the second-year students are encouraged to undertake a social project through which they address the needs of the society. They raise funds through various creative methods like organizing charity events, sell homemade goods on campus, design and sell customized products like mugs, key chains and T shirts.

    So far, our students have visited Sunshine Home, Trichy, Gregory Trust, Siruganur, Shanthi Nilayam, Karur, Anbalayam Trichy, Kangaroo Illam, Trichy, CSI Primary School, Koppu Village and many such places in order to cater to the needs of the deserving people.

  1. Exclusive Clubs

  • The Department is a haven for heterogeneous students who come from diverse backgrounds and with diverse skills and abilities. In order to tap their talents, various clubs like Eco club, Culinary Club, Macreme (Arts and Crafts) Club, Quiz Club, Performing Arts Club, Investors Club, Journalism Club, Communication Club, Social Media Club, Mindfulness Club have been formed for the benefit of the students.

    Each Club conducts exclusive activities pertaining to their domain and the students are motivated to further proceed into inter collegiate competitions.

  1. Intercollegiate for PG students

  • The department conducts an inter collegiate competitions exclusively for post graduate students, HERMA which is unique of its kind. These events bring together students from various institutions, fostering healthy competition, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • The Alumni Educational Fund is a meaningful initiative designed to support deserving students in their academic pursuits. Established by the esteemed alumni of our institution, this fund serves as a bridge between past and present students, fostering a culture of giving back and uplifting future generations.

  1. Commerce Multimedia Lab.

  • The Department of Commerce features a dedicated Multimedia Lab/Studio, located on the third floor of the administration block, designed to facilitate the development of high-quality multimedia e-content and e-tutorials. This 12x10 feet studio is optimized for various recording scenarios, including single presenter recordings, interviews, and dual presentations. Equipped with advanced state of the art equipment, the studio includes a Sony Alpha 6400 camera for 4K resolution capture, a three-point key lighting system, teleprompter provision, and professional audio equipment to ensure crystal-clear sound recording. The studio's acoustic treatment, featuring bass traps and reverb/echo reduction measures, creates an optimal recording environment. Furthermore, the studio offers versatility with three backdrops and a green screen, enabling the production of diverse multimedia content, such as plain backdrop recordings, green screen productions, software/application capture with presenter inclusion, and voice-over presentations."

    As we all step into a new paradigm shift in education where teaching can reach anyone, anywhere at any time. The department focus on developing E-Content and online courses on MOOC platforms to facilitate better teaching learning for students and also to provide consultancy services to other departments and institutions

  1. Entrepreneurship Hub

    a. COIN-EN CENTRE (Commerce Incubation for Entrepreneurship Centre) The Department of Commerce houses an Entrepreneurship Incubation Centre, where students receive hands-on training in various business ventures. As part of this initiative, students are taught to create door mats, equipping them with essential skills in production and small-scale enterprise management. Additionally, the centre features a 5-in-1 printing machine, where students learn to design and produce customized products such as t-shirts, mugs, and other personalized merchandise. The finished products crafted by students are sold at the Commerce Mart, providing them with first-hand experience in marketing, sales, and business operations. This initiative not only enhances their technical and entrepreneurial skills but also instills a sense of financial independence and business acumen.

    b. Commerce Mart The department operates stores that provide students with practical experience in marketing, accounting, and inventory auditing. Within these stores, students sell snacks, drinks, and stationery items. The finished products crafted by the students through the incubation centre are also sold in the commerce mart. This hands-on experience equips them with real-world skills they can apply beyond the classroom.

    c. ED Cell Entrepreneurship Development Cell was established with an aim to make the students a job creator rather than a job seeker. Various programs like training programs, conferences, exhibition cum sale, industry visits are organized through ED cell. This sparks the interest of the students to start their own units. Every year a Three-Day Symposium will be organized to equip emerging college entrepreneurs with essential tools and expert mentorship. Students actively participate in business plan presentations, and the most promising ideas will be selected. This year the winners were awarded smart cards by TN start-up in recognition of well-structured and Innovative business ideas.

    d. Fashion Design Lab The Fashion Design Lab is an initiative by the department of commerce for women faculty members and students it’s a movement towards empowering women in the fashion industry. By fostering creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, we help women turn their fashion dreams into reality.
