About

The Department of Biotechnology explores well in academic & research activities with a team of dedicated, efficient and well qualified faculty members under the able leadership of the Head of the department. The strength of the department is evident through the patents, research projects and publications with high impact factors of the faculty members and the well-established sophisticated lab facilities for UG, PG and research students. The students are trained to be competent to meet the demands of the job market and also showcase their skills in the emerging areas of life sciences by earning extra credits in specialized courses in the field of biological sciences and other skill oriented courses.

The department further strives to train the young students in technical education and research by imparting biological and computational knowledge through updated curriculum and involve the students in a number of socially relevant extension activities to sensitize the society and introduce radical changes in issues like environmental protection, human health and agricultural upliftment.

Historical Background & Milestones

The department was established in 2002 offering M.Sc Biotechnology. Within a time span of two decades, the department has grown in strength and has emerged as one of the star departments of Bishop Heber College.

B.Sc Biotechnology was initiated in 2016 and the Diploma in Bioanalytical Techniques was started in 2006 to inculcate biological skills to bioinformatics students. The demand in admission led to the start of shift II for both UG and PG Biotechnology.

The Helix association of the department conducts several student-centric programs through lectures and workshops by experts from varied fields of biology. Annual funded conferences are conducted to expose students to the newer depth in Biotechnology.

The department has well-developed state of art labs separately for UG and PG housing several instruments. Plant tissue and Animal Cell Culture facility helps the students to be trained in their practical skills.

The strength of the department is attributed to the contributions of the faculty in publications, patents and awards.

Faculty

The department encompasses a team of highly-efficient and well-qualified teaching faculty with good experience in teaching and research. The research expertise among the faculty members is distinct and diverse. The quality and reputation of the faculty members are reflected in their publication of research papers and books, projects undertaken and patents registered. In addition, they share their expertise in different capacities.

B.Sc Biotechnology

This programme prepares the students for higher education at prestigious national institutes and for suitable jobs in the world job market. Students will acquire comprehensive knowledge of the core and cross disciplinary domains of Biotechnology as the curriculum comprises updated theory and practical courses. The technical abilities needed for employment in the field of Biotechnology and Health care sectors will be offered through this programme.

M.Sc. Biotechnology

This programme is designed to provide opportunities in research and enterprise domains. The students would acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding in various fields of Biotechnology. They would develop the ability to think critically, design research creatively and communicate effectively to present their research findings. The technical, experimental skills in Tissue Culture and Digital Competency are embedded with regular teaching and learning for the progression of students in research and placement opportunities in reputed sectors.

Ph.D. in Biotechnology

Graduates can apply for Full-time and Part-time Ph.D. programme. The students would be enabled to apply their knowledge in their chosen domain and create new knowledge through problem solving skill, technology competency and excellent communication skills to publish original research articles in the reputed journals and file their findings as Intellectual Property.

Diploma Programmmes

Diploma in Bioanalytical Techniques(DBAT) was initiated in 2006 and is offered to Bioinformatics students to upgrade and apply their knowledge for the cross disciplinary applications to provide innovative outcomes.
