Just an Introduction..

Biotechnology has created a revolution affecting man the world over in every walk of life. With the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, the immense potential that lies in biotechnology has become evident. Today, scientists from every branch of science are looking at biological models to solve their problems. Industries are keenly watching the developments and are eager to adopt biotechnology. Some of the sick industries have abandoned their ongoing programmes and adopted biotechnology which has helped them not only survive but prosper. Biotechnology has brought new hope for the remediation and conservation of environment. In the field of medicine, be it drug designing, drug delivery, replacing damaged tissues or gene therapy, biotechnology is in the forefront.

Biotechnology operates at the molecular level of life, where the seemingly solid boundary between species disappears. More generally biotechnology is an umbrella term that covers various fields including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Cell Biology, etc.

Having opened a great avenue for education and employment for the young, our College has now launched itself on to the international stream of imparting knowledge and developing skills in the areas of life science that has directly contributed to the welfare of mankind.


Involvement

Concepts in Biotechnology are derived from experiments and powerful experimental tools. The reputation of the Department is based on the practical utility and quality of the equipment that is available to the students. The department has a good collection of various sophisticated and state -of-the -art equipments from around the world such as Centrifuge and PCR from Eppendorf (Germany) and Gel Documentation System from Bio-rad (USA), Straight Trinocular Microscope and Inverted Microscope from Carl Zeiss (Germany) and CO2 Incubator from Mini Galaxy (UK), to mention a few.


Infrastructure

Since its establishment in June 2002, the department has been striving to achieve excellence through state - of the - art facilities such as the following:

  • Plant Tissue Culture: We have a moderate plant tissue culture lab where we conduct routine teaching and research experiments. We also have a plant growth chamber and accessory facilities
  • Animal Tissue Culture: A separate, running animal tissue culture facility houses a dedicated laminar air flow, CO2 incubator, inverted microscope and cell homogeniser.
  • Microbiology and Fermentation facility : We have well-equipped microbiological facilities including a fermentor, shaker, autoclaves and other accessory instruments under regular use.
  • Recombinant DNA Technology : Most modern facilities are available to carry out experiments related to cloning and gene expression. The facilities include DNA Manual Sequencer, Gel Electrophoresis,Electroporator,Sonicator,FPLC, PCR, gel documentation, water baths, Incubator Shakers, Centrifuges, Laminar Air Flow etc.
  • Excelling as a biotechnologist is only by practising biotechnology and that is why the biotechnology laboratory at Bishop Heber is open for 24 hours even on holidays. Students find it encouraging and are motivated to work for better results and to improve their skills in the various avenues of the subject. This also becomes necessary as most of the experiments in biotechnology run for more than 12 hours.
